Berlin-Spandau station has Germany's longest platform hall, with 440 meters and a roof area totaling 11,000 square meters - a challenge for cleaning professionals to keep this complex clean as well.
The station was built according to the plans of the architectural firm Gerkan, Mard and Partners (gmp) and gradually opened in 1997/1998. It was quickly realized how complicated it is to remove dirt from the four curved glass tunnel roofs - because it is stubborn. The dirt is composed of common impurities mixed with metal dust. The dust is created by the brake and overhead line drive. Together with moisture, it forms a reddish-brown layer that makes the glass roof murky.
